  • As economy reopens, workers’ health may be collateral damage

Trump, followed immediately by Republican governors across the nation, stated that our nation “must reopen.” Those governors then told workers in their states that they must return to work when recalled, or they will have their unemployment benefits cut off.

This past week, with millions more filing jobless claims, the total new claims related to the coronavirus have reached 40 million, meaning the total jobless numbers are probably already past the 50 million figure put out by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

  • CP attack class-based racism and call for nationalisation to save jobs

‘The vicious killing of George Floyd has highlighted the racism that still pervades developed capitalist societies and their state institutions’, Mollie Brown declared at the Communist Party of Britain’s executive committee meeting this weekend.  She pointed to recent examples of the deaths and serious injuries of black detainees in police custody in Britain, the US and France which, she suggested, were also related to the use of dangerous restraint techniques that were used disproportionately against black and working-class people.

  • Trump, white supremacy, and racial capitalism

The U.S. stands at a crossroads. In one direction lies more of what we’ve already known: repression, exploitation, and brutality. In the other, the promise of freedom, socialist equality, and racial justice.

Liberal economist Jeffrey Sachs recently wrote that as the U.S. approached 100,000 deaths from COVID-19, “six Asia-Pacific nations–Australia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan, and Vietnam–have just over 1,200 coronavirus deaths in a combined population almost the same as the U.S., 328 million.” Sachs might have also noted that China has four times as many people as the U.S. and has suffered 120 the number of deaths.

  • Ireland Stands with Minneapolis #BlackLivesMatter

STATEMENT ON THE MURDER OF GEORGE FLOYD

The Connolly Youth Movement is shocked to see the video footage of a police officer kneeling on an innocent man and choking him to death while he called for help. This is a tragedy, but it is no accident. It is part of the law enforcement and justice system in the United States, which dates back to slavery. It has maintained this system, and ethnic minorities are imprisoned and murdered in wild disproportion to population amounts. We stand in solidarity and send our deepest condolences to the friends and family of George Floyd. We express our solidarity with the protestors, who have no means to express themselves, other than the destruction of the institutions that oppress and murder them.

The situation that arose due to the coronavirus pandemic, imposed the immediate necessary adjustment of the operation and action of the entire Party and the KNE. It was our response to the inadequate "We stay home" government propaganda.

  • »In Order to Obtain Changes there must be Pressure from Below«

Accelerated liberalization of the country and the world of work forced to pay for the crisis... In order to counter the strategy of “shock therapy”, to construct a new model and hope, Fabien Roussel, national secretary of the PCF, calls for the widest possible mobilization. For “unity in action”.

    L’Humanité, Thursday, 28th May 2020

Fabien Roussel has gone back to the factory. On 25th May he was at Renault in Choisy-le-Roi (Val-de-Marne), in order to denounce the site closures planned by the manufacturer and propose another future for the industry. An initiative which illustrates the communists’ call for action. For the national secretary of the PCF, the way out of the crisis, which promises to be brutal if alternatives do not emerge quickly, lies in popular mobilization.

  • Memo to protesters: Think of the frontline workers!

I have seen several posts on Facebook and on TV of health-care workers giving accounts of what it’s like on the front lines of ICUs, emergency departments, and 911 call centers. Many, generously and compassionately, attest to knowing others who have it worse than they do. But they also speak of not having adequate protective clothing and equipment, of trying to make do with plastic trash bags for gowns and reusing masks in place of proper gear that would really protect them. Some of these workers have immunosuppressive conditions such as asthma; nevertheless, they continue to go to work, aware of their own peril but knowing there might not be someone to take their place. They often go home dead tired, having worked 12-hour shifts.
