When the protest reached the Parliament building, they put up a banner with the slogan “They destroy the Earth and our lives - Their system needs to be overthrown”. With slogans on the picket signs they were holding and the flyers they were throwing all over the centre of Athens, KNE members denounced this bill by declaring that the “green business” it promotes are sacrificing the environment and the people’s contemporary needs to the business interests and that the liberal ND government is walking the path of the social-democratic SYRIZA by degrading the lives of the people and the youth. • 1945 and its aftermath – an eyewitness remembers

Communist Party veteran DAVID GROVE remembers celebrating victory over fascism 75 years ago, and asks why the bright promise of 1945 went unfulfilled.

OR anyone, like me, born in the 1920s, the year 1945 was, politically, the most exciting of our lives. And it was probably the most critical year in human history.

Worldwide there was victory over fascism, and in Britain Labour won the general election with a big majority on a radical manifesto.

  • The Red army ‘tore the guts’ out of the Nazi war machine’

Geoffrey Roberts is Emeritus Professor of History at UCC and a former member of the British Communist Party.

The guns fell silent three-quarters of a century ago and this year’s commemoration of the end of the Second World War in Europe has been overshadowed by the coronavirus crisis. But the sharp political struggle about the causes, course and consequences of the war continues unabated. On one side are those who celebrate the allied victory in 1945 as an important validation of anti-fascist unity while, on the other, are those who lament the communist subjugation of parts of Europe in the decades that followed.

  • 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two

Communist Party general secretary Robert Griffiths said today (May 8), “Today is a special day. A day to celebrate with joy the triumph of democracy, independence and liberation in Europe over the deadly force of fascism, on May 8 and 9,1945.

  • Communist Parties Mark 75 Years to Victory over Nazism & Fascism

comunistaThe victory over Nazism and fascism in the Second World War is a major event in history, the memory of which must be preserved and defended in the face of repeated attempts at historical falsification aimed at making the broad public forget the decisive role played by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), communists and anti-fascists from around the world.

The Communist Party of Britain condemns the attempted infiltration of armed mercenaries into Venezuelan territory on 4 May reportedly acting for the US-backed usurper Juan Guaido. • Solidarity in the time of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has put every democratic right we hold dear, every benefit we have won, in dire danger.

President Donald Trump is determined to solve this pandemic on the backs of the working class. Under cover of the crisis, he and his minions would further consolidate corporate power. Democratic rights, including the right to a fair and free election, are in danger of being taken from us.

  • Long live International Workers Day!

On this International Workers’ Day, the coronavirus crisis has demonstrated, in stark and dramatic ways, that it is the labour power of the working class – whether by hand or brain – which makes our society function.

We could manage without the bankers, the speculators, the property tycoons, the wealthy shareholders – but our society would collapse in one week without the workers who provide our essential industries and services. Capitalism’s bankers and financiers and billionaires like Richard Branson have their begging bowls out for public money when their system is in crisis – yet they take evey opportunity to live as tax exiles overseas to avoid paying tax.

  • The »New Marshall Plan« and the communists' response

kke greeceBy Dimitris Koutsoumbas, General Secretary of the CC of the KKE

The outbreak of the pandemic, its rapid spread, its profound consequences for human life and especially in the more developed capitalist economies, have brought great problems to the surface, which of course pre-existed, but emerged today in a loud and tragic way. The big contradictions and contrasts are even more evident in all aspects of social, economic, political, cultural life and reality, in each country individually and internationally. We must definitely make a greater collective effort and contribution not only to record and codify the new issues, but also further highlight them as well as the main trends of the developments, to draw the necessary conclusions and tasks, both in theoretical and in political, practical level. After all, many issues and aspects are still in progress.

Today, which engraved in our people’s minds as “Children’s Day”, is the 100th anniversary of the establishment of The Grand National Assembly, which symbolizes Turkey’s independence. The gains of the struggle of independence and enlightenment which started in our country 100 years ago, has been annihilated over time and replaced with the bourgeoisie’s dominance and exploitation.

However, today, it is not possible for a child to celebrate “Children’s Day” in our country.

  • “Urgent need for a stronger Communist party”

‘Yet, at this very time, the pro-capitalist forces in the Labour Party are triumphant behind new leader Keir Starmer, determined to push the party back to the mushy middle-ground and marginalise the left’, he warned.

Mr Johnson said the recent internal report on anti-Semitism in the Labour Party recounted a ‘horror story’ of abuse, sabotage and betrayal of the party and its former leader Jeremy Corbyn and his team’.
