  • Mike Pompeo, Benjamin Netanyahu not welcome to Portugal

«Mike Pompeo and Benjamin Netanyahu are not welcome to Portugal» was, more than the motto, the outcry that emerged from the public action carried out at the end of the afternoon, December 6, at Largo Camões, noble space of Lisbon, already well known for the initiatives in defence of peace that regularly take place there.

  • Voices from the Left: Trump’s Plan, One for Annexation, Not for Peace

When, amidst his characteristic bombast, US President Donald Trump festively revealed his “Deal of the Century” last week in Washington, he repeated the terms “peace plan” and “Palestinian state” several times. In response, Peace Now has written, “Despite the seemingly appropriate words and the celebratory atmosphere, an examination of the details of the plan, clearly reveal the degree to which it lacks both peace and a Palestinian state. A deeper assessment indicates that the plan not only neglects to advance peace, but also has the potential to severely harm prospects for a genuine peace plan for both parties.”

Statements similar to this one against the Trump Plan have been made by a range of peace and labor movements and appear in this week’s edition of the Hebrew-language Communist weekly Zu Haderech. What follows are summaries of some of these responses from prominent Israeli peace groups as well as three from organizations overseas.

  • Amidst “Deal of the Century,” Israel Launches Trade War against the PA

Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) appear to be on the brink of a trade war, with the far-right government’s Defense Minister, Naftali Bennett, announcing on Friday, January 31, that Israel would be stopping all agricultural imports from the occupied West Bank starting Sunday, February 2.

What triggered this discord was an October decision by the Palestinians to boycott cattle and sheep meat products from Israel, with the Palestinian Authority complaining that the occupying power was forcing it to buy from Israeli farmers and limiting its access to cheaper meat products from overseas.

  • Gantz’s Push for Annexation Makes Joint List Support for Him Unlikely

Senior members of the Joint List maintain that, given Blue & White’s support for US President Trump’s “Deal of the Century,” chances are slim that the alliance will recommend that Israel’s president grant MK Benny Gantz, B&W’s leader, the opportunity to form a new government, even if his party attains the highest number of Knesset seats in the March 2 election.

Hadash MK Youssef Jabareen said Friday, January 31, that the four-party bloc would not repeat giving its backing to Blue & White after the next election because Gantz declared that, if he is assigned the task of forming a coalition and succeeds in attaining the premiership, he will work to adopt Trump’s imperialist plan, which the Joint list unequivocally rejects.

  • Protests against Trump Plan in Tel Aviv, the Galilee and Arab Triangle

Thousands of Jews and Arabs protested in central Tel Aviv, last night (Saturday, February 1), against US President Donald Trump’s “Deal of the Century.” The demonstrators gathered in Dizengoff Square and marched from there to Ibn Gvirol Avenue. Following the procession, a rally was held where speakers included Joint List MK Aida Touma-Sliman, Darwish Rabi (Hadash) Mayor of Jaljulya, Hadash union activist Maysam Jaljuli, well know author Yehoshua Sobol and Peace Now CEO Shaked Morag. The protest was organized by Hadash, the Communist Party of Israel, Peace Now, the Geneva Initiative, Combatants for Peace, the Parents Circle Families Forum, Standing Together, A Land for All and other anti-occupation movements and grassroots organizations.

  • Joint List MK Yazbak Disqualified from Participating in the Elections

In a vote held on Wednesday, January 29, the Knesset’s Central Elections Committee officially disqualified Joint List MK Heba Yazbak (Balad) from running in the March 2 elections. The vote was 27 for the disqualification and 7 against.

  • Trump’s Middle East plan reeks of discrimination

President Trump’s plan for a Palestinian state is a smokescreen to legitimise Israel’s theft of Palestinian land, its illegal settlements, the creeping annexation of Jerusalem and the Jordan valley, the forced displacement of Palestinians and the apartheid wall.

For decades, Israel has sought to create “facts on the ground” to destroy any effort for the two state solution. Trump is now rewarding Israel for this lawless behaviour, including the many grave violations of international law and war crimes.

  • Declaration of the Regional Office of the World Federation of Trade Unions in the Middle East on the so-called “Deal of the Century”

The US administration, represented by the head of its pyramid, presented the US President Donald Trump with a hostile and provocative step has announced in public a press conference with the Prime Minister of the Israeli entity, “Beniamin Netanyahu” that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Zionist entity and that the occupied Syrian Golan has become part of what is called the State of Israel, and that the Palestinians has to accept the fait accompli and to join the peace process in order to have a state recognized by the American administration that has no borders but rather is based on separate and fragmented cantons. On the other hand, they will have investments that make their promised state a paradise on earth, otherwise they will face more and more isolation.

  • Netanyahu Indicted after Dropping Request for Immunity from Knesset

Israel’s attorney general filed three indictments on Tuesday, January 28, against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu charging him in a triad of corruption cases, only hours after the far-right leader withdrew his request for a parliamentary vote to grant him immunity from prosecution. The Knesset was widely expected to reject Netanyahu’s immunity request, which would have dealt a huge blow to the prime minister ahead of the elections.

  • US proposals on Israel/Palestine are an affront to Palestinian rights and dignity

The Trump administration’s proposals on Israel and Palestine, announced on Tuesday, are an affront to Palestinian rights and dignity and have none of the elements of a realistic peace plan. The proposals, launched jointly by President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, were drawn up by Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who has extensive business and financial links with Israeli companies.

“The announcement this week provides no basis for peace and justice, and has been rejected by the Palestinian Authority. There was no serious dialogue or consultation with Palestinians. Peace can only be achieved through negotiations based on international law, not through imposing a completely unacceptable one-sided formula on the Palestinian people. The US proposals will severely damage prospects for a just and peaceful settlement,” said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow.

  • Netanyahu’s Right-Wing Bloc to Boycott Knesset Vote on Immunity

The Knesset is expected to vote today (Tuesday, January 28) to convene a legislative committee to discuss far-right Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s immunity application.

In November, Netanyahu was charged with fraud, bribery and breach of trust in three cases. The Knesset’s plenum discussion will take place while Netanyahu is in Washington for the unveiling of US President Donald Trump’s imperialist “Deal of the Century”.

  • In Another Terror Attack, Jewish Settlers Torch Beit Safafa Mosque

redglobeSettlers desecrated and torched a mosque on Friday, January 24, in the village of Beit Safafa, southwest of Jerusalem. A group of Jewish settlers clandestinely entered the village before dawn, sprayed racist slogans on the walls of the Al-Badriya Mosque and then set fire to the building, partially damaging it.

The Palestinian Ministry of Religious Affairs and Awqaf [plural of Waqf – an Islamic religious trust], in charge of managing mosques affairs, condemned the attack as a “heinous crime which is evidence of the brutality of the Israeli racist incitement machine towards Islamic and Christian holy sites in Palestine.”

  • CPI Rejects any Imperialistic Steps by US Violating International Law

The Communist Party of Israel (CPI) unequivocally rejects the imminent US publishing of details of US President Donald Trump’s imperialistic Middle East plan, dubbed the “Deal of the Century,” prior to a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his challenger in the forthcoming election, MK Benny Gantz, to the White House on Monday, January 28. The CPI contends that publishing of the plan now would likely lead to the rapid reinstatement of military rule and occupation over the Palestinian people for generations.

Following the announcement by Trump on Thursday, January 23, that he intends to release the details of his “Deal” before next Monday’s meeting with Netanyahu and Gantz, Israeli media reported that according to preliminary plans, Israel would claim sovereignty over the Jordan Valley and immediately annex of all but 15 illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, as well as the land linking them. Jerusalem would be declared the capital of Israel, while the creation of a “demilitarized Palestinian state” would be agreed upon at a later time.

  • UN Official: Israel’s Jordan Valley Annexation Would Be Devastating

Nickolay Mladenov, United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, expressed grave concern on Wednesday, January 22 regarding Israeli plans to annex the occupied Jordan Valley, stressing that such a step would have devastating effects on the region.

“The annexation of some or all of Area C in the West Bank, if implemented, would deal a devastating blow to the potential of reviving Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, advancing regional peace, and the essence of the two-state solution,” said Mladenov in a tweet.

  • Hadash, CPI Reject Barring of Joint List MK Heba Yazbak from Election

Likud MK Ophir Katz filed a request with the Knesset’s Central Elections Committee on Tuesday, January 21, to disqualify Balad MK Heba Yazbak (Joint List) from running in the March 2 general elections, just a day before the deadline for submitting such requests.

Senior Blue & White lawmaker and former neo-liberal Ministry of Treasure, Yair Lapid, subsequently announced that his party would join the Likud and others in backing the petition to bar the Palestinian-Arab woman parliamentarian and citizen of Israel from running for the next Knesset.

  • 52 Communist & Workers’ Parties Denounce the US’s Criminal Attack

comunistaThe undersigned Communist and Workers’ Parties, denounce the latest criminal military attack of the US, under Trump’s command, against the territory of a foreign country, specifically the international airport of Iraq, which resulted in scores of dead and wounded, among them officials of Iraq and an Iranian General. This constituted a flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty of Iraq.

  • Education Head Stuns with Latest Homophobic and Racist Remarks

Schools, teachers’ unions, social movements, LGTB organizations and mayors throughout the country reacted with shock after the Minister of Education, far-right and messianic Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home) leader Rabbi Rafi Peretz, again publicly made racist and homophobic remarks.

In an interview published in Yediot Aharonot last Friday, January 10, Peretz said a normative family is “with a man and a woman, and should be kept that way.” This remark was in response to a question about what he would do if one of his children were to “come out of the closet.” “Thank God my children grew up naturally and healthily,” Peretz told the newspaper. Last July, Peretz said he believed “conversion therapy” could succeed in “converting” homosexual people to be heterosexual and that he had given counseling on the matter.

In addition, more people died in work accidents in 2019 than in any year since 1995, according to a report published on last Tuesday, January 8, by the workers’ rights organization Kav LaOved (Workers’ Hotline).

  • MK Cassif: It is Israel’s Interest to Stop American Belligerence in Iran

Leading Communist Party of Israel member MK Ofer Cassif (Hadash – Joint List) published the following op-ed in the Hebrew and English editions of the Israeli newspaper Haaretz on Thursday, January 9.

On Friday January 3, I said that if American bullying costs the lives of Israelis, it will be because of US President Donald Trump and his friend Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. My words were immediately criticized, and it was even said that I identify with the enemy. In the face of the ignorance, the lies and the incitement, I have decided to explain.

The Iranian regime is an evil, extremist and cruel regime. It is evil and cruel mainly to Iranian citizens. The Revolutionary Guards Quds Force of Qassem Soleimani, the emissary of Iranian spiritual leader Ali Khameini, really is responsible for killing and destruction. It was not in his name, not for his stake and not for his successors that my friends and I, confronting almost unanimous political agreement, said: No. This assassination is American belligerence, an injustice that will exact a price in blood.

  • Palestinian Foreign Ministry Blasts US Position on Occupied W. Bank

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned statements made last Wednesday, January 8, by US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, in which he emphasized the right of Israeli presence in the occupied West Bank, which he referred to as “Judea and Samaria.”

Speaking at the far-right Kohelet Forum Conference in Jerusalem, Friedman said, “Judea and Samaria – the name Judea says it all – is territory that historically had an important Jewish presence. As they say, it is the biblical heartland of Israel.” He also referred to the US declaration that Israeli settlements in the occupied territory are “not, per se, inconsistent with international law,” and opted to describe the West Bank issue as a population issue, stating that it is “certainly the most complicated of the issues because of the large indigenous Palestinian population.” “I thank God that President Trump had the courage and the wisdom to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move our embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv,” said Friedman.
