Tomorrow, a national strike has been called for in Colombia by a broad sector in civil society to protest against the government’s policies, the lack of progress in the implementation of the peace agreement with FARC-EP, the situation of violence, which affects indigenous and rural communities, the lack of guarantees for social leaders and ex-combatants, and corruption.

Organisations and social movements warn of the risk of excessive use of force by members of the security forces during demonstrations, of massive and generalized detentions of people exercising their right to demonstrate and the stigmatization of the sectors calling for strike by members of the governing party, which endangers social leaders. Between January and September 2019 there have been more than 100 murders of human rights defenders, and in October alone 11 indigenous leaders have been assassinated.

The Colombian government is promoting a series of anti-workers’ measures aimed at further privatizing of social Insurance and Healthcare, while imposing more flexible labor relations with victims primarily the young workers. The anti-workers’ policy of the Colombian Government is combined with repression, persecution, assassinations of workers, trade unionists, people’s militant.

On 28 August 2019, Iván Márquez, a lead negotiator of the Peace Accord and former commander within the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP), alongside Jesus Santrich and other ex-rebels, announced that they are rearming. Among the reasons behind this decision lie the lack of political commitment to implementing the Peace Accord, the rising number of FARC ex-combatants being killed, the conditions in which FARC combatants have had to live, ever increasing number of social leaders being killed and legal insecurity amongst other things. The Peace Accord between the FARC and the Colombian Government was signed in 2016 but was not respected by the latter. More than 150 ex-guerrillas and 600 social leaders were killed in the last three years.

The writer and political activist Gloria Gaitán, daughter of Colombian leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, expressed through an open letter to the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, her most sincere thanks for exalting the memory of her father who fought for the people and democracy of the Republic of Colombia.

On Tuesday, the Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Jorge Arreaza, condemned on behalf of the Venezuelan people and government, the human rights violations as well as the recent massacres of indigenous leaders and Colombian ex-combatants.

“The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, supports the people of Colombia and their right to peace”, said the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, through his Twitter account @jaarreaza, in response to the statements of his counterpart, Carlos Holmes Trujillo.

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Seán Crowe TD,has outlined his deep concern for the political process in Colombia after the FARC had to suspend their political campaigning for the upcoming Congressionaland Presidential elections due to attacks on their campaign.

Deputy Seán Crowe said: “It is clear that the Colombian Government is failing toprotect political and community leaders from deadly attacks from right wingparamilitaries.

FARCThe Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC, have ended their Congress ahead of the group's transition into a political party, as part of the peace agreement to end more than five decades of conflict. At the closing session, the FARC also confirmed their new name, the Revolutionary Alternative Forces of the Commons, leaving the group with the same acronym they have been known by for decades.

Some 1,200 members attended the Congress and were joined by about 200 international guests and 400 journalists. At its plenary session, the delegates also approved the fundamental elements of the party, its political platform, and revealed its new symbol. Campesinos, Indigenous people, Afro-descendants and women's representatives from across the country joined the Congress’ delegation.

FARC-EPAfter the killings of FARC-EP members, paramilitaries systematically continue to kill their relatives. Marcos Calarcá, a representative of the guerrilla to the Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (MM & V), referred to Noticias Uno that »it is not a sporadic event, it is a plan; no one can develop those kind of operations of national impact without an organizational framework behind it«. In the same way, Calarcá said that although paramilitaries change their name they are still the same ones that want to annihilate social movements and all those who are committed to peace.

Our comrade, who had benefited from the Amnesty and Pardon Act as established in the Final Agreement and who had been released days before he was murdered while visiting relatives. Pepe leaves a 6 months old baby girl.
